Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture

This museum in Spokane has everything to offer the art critique and more.

It has a vast array of art exhibitions, as well as local art, culture and history.

Museum hours run Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Historic Campbell House has tours most Wednesdays through Saturdays at 12 – 3 p.m. on the hour. A tour is included with admission.

The museum is closed on holidays however.

Based on what your interests are it varies how long it will take you to journey through the museum but the Campbell House tours are about 50 minutes in length.

Not permitted in the building are:

-backpacks

-packages

-large handbags

-food or drink

-umbrellas

-Tri-Pods

Either leave these belongings in your car or there are storage lockers that charge 25 cents each to use.

You can take personal photos and video in the museum unless otherwise informed. Place cards are posted in the restricted areas.

Who said you need a car to travel from Pullman to Moscow?

Bill Chipman Palouse Trail is an 8 mile path that follows along an abandoned railroad, over 13 bridges that cross over Paradise creek.

Whether you bike, walk, run, you can make the journey from one town of Palouse to the next and enjoy the fresh air.

Trailheads begin at:

Pullman – the Quality Inn

Moscow – Perimeter Drive

The trail opened in 1998 through efforts of members of the Pullman Civic Trust.

It is named in memory of Bill Chipman, who was a good friend to many on the Palouse and died in a tragic 1996 car crash.

It is suggested that you bring water and appropriate clothing when tackling the trail as it is exposed to all elements of mother nature.

John’s Alley is called Moscow’s home of live music.

Living in Pullman Moscow area finding a good sushi place is a hard feat to accomplish luckily I have looked around and stumbled among the quaint little restaurant of Red Binto in Moscow Idaho which is voted Best Sushi on the Palouse.

What does Red Binto have to offer?
For a variety of appetizers including edamame and gyoza, to non sushi entrees of rice bowls, Yakisoba, Teriyaki, Salads and Soup, Katsu, Udon, Bentos and a variety of combos. Red Binto has a large sushi menu of over 50 rolls to satisfy anyone's sushi likings and desires.

What is Red Binto best known for?
Red Binto is known for the "Binto Box" which includes soup, salad, rice, 2 pieces of gyoza, and a choice of two entrees that are listed below (10+ items to choose from) starting at $9.50!

What do I recommend?
I personally LOVE the binto box but if you want some more sushi I recommend the edamame for $4.75 and the Ichi Roll for $7.95 and has 10-15 pieces of sushi. Allowing you to spend less an $15.00 on a delicious but satisfying meal.

Nuthouse is an improv comedy at its finest. The group is known for offering up rib-cracking scenes on the spot using the audience’s suggestions. Think, “Whose Line is it Anyways” meets college students.

What exactly is this swing dancing event?
This fun filled dancing event will be held November 26th at 730PM at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. The sixteen member band called Hog Heaven Big Band is playing its 6th annual performance.

What is the cost?
The cost for admittance is $8.00 for a couple, $5.00 for a single and anyone under the age of 12 is free!

What if I cant dance?
Complimentary dance lessons are available at the Barn at 6PM, no reservations required. If you really arent in the dancing mood, come and sit back and relax and enjoy the music from the past.

With only three weeks left in the semester it is time for studying and cramming for papers, quizzes and exams but everyone needs to have a place to go and blow off some steam. Wednesdays are the new Fridays and are a great way to be able to celebrate the middle of the week!

Where can I go for Wing Wednesdays?

There are two main options for getting your Wing fix. You can either choose Valhalla which has recently been remodeled into the ultimate hangout place complete with flat screens filling all the walls upstairs to watch all your favorite sports and shows. Valhalla sells two flavors of wings on Wednesdays, one flavor is the famous spicy flavor which gets the line wrapped around the bar. Stubblefields is the other bar you can choose from which is the classic dance spot bar on campus where you usually can find the bar wall to wall packed on any given day. Stubblefields has a variety of wings to choose from and a couple different flavors but I highly recommend their famous remix flavor.

What kind of deals are available on Wing Wednesday?

Valhalla sells 12 wings for $3.00 and dipping sauce is available for only $0.50 a cup. There specials are usually Jack Daniels singles for $3.00 and doubles for $6.00 but of course there is Hammas bucket for only $4.00!
Stubblefields sells 7 wings for $3.00 and dipping sauce is free for one. Stubblefields mixes up their specials daily and has a variety of five different drinks at special discount price so you never know what to expect and there is always a variety.

New Way of Camping... The Yurt!

With the temperature dropping lower and lower the summer camping trips seem to be coming a thing of the past until the next warm season months are amongst us yet again, right? WRONG! Not if you grab a group of friends and travel to Winchester State Park in Winchester Idaho located only 67 miles away!

What is a yurt?
Is basically a bent wooden or canvas tent structure that has the ability to house from 2-10 people depending on the size and allows you an exceptional camping experience that otherwise could not be achieved in a tent. Depending on the yurt you have the ability to sleep up to 10 people, cook, clean, play games, etc; You essentially are camping in what seems to be a miniature cabin.

How much does this cost?

WSU Brewfest will be taking place celebrating the Friday of Washington State University Dads Weekend, November, 11 2011.

What is WSU Brewfest?
WSU Brewfest is celebrating its 5th annual Brewfest with live music, catered food and crafted breweries for you and your dad to taste and explore this weekend. The theme this year is "Cougs through the Years", so wear your best cougar gear and come and see what types of beers they have to offer you.

Where is this taking place and when?
WSU brewfest is taking place at the SEL Event Center in Pullman Washington on Friday November 11, 2011 (11.11.11). There are two tasting sessions, one from 5-7PM and the second tasting session at 8-10PM.

What is the cost?
Tickets are available at http://brewfest.wsu.edu/ before the event for $30.00-$35.00 and $40.00 at the door on the day of the event. You must be 21 and older to attend. The admission will cover a catered buffet, silent auction, live music, a tasting class for you to keep, and 10 tasting tickets. Additional tickets are available to purchase at the event. Tickets are non-refundable.

How should I get there?
There is a parking lot available but for your safety there will be a shuttle provided at Flag Lane (corner of Colorado and Stadium and shuttling to the SEL Event Center. The shuttle begins at 4:30PM and will end at 10:30PM.

Looking for something new and different to enjoy in Pullman? Regional Theatre of the Palouse offers Broadway classics right in your neighborhood! On Grand Avenue in Pullman, only about three miles away from campus, you can witness talented actors and fantasic shows all year long.

Current Season Production
There are four shows for the 2011-2012 season. The first show is based off on the film "Meet Me in St. Louis" staring Judy Garland. The first set of shows were this weekend (the 4th-6th); however, there will be three more shows next weekend on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (10th-12th) at 7:30 p.m., and one special matinee showing at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. During the weekends of February 9th and 16th they will be presenting the Broadway hit comedy "The Odd Couple". In April (just in time for Mom's Weekend) they are presenting "The Secret Garden", which I, for one, can't wait to see. The weekends are the 12th and the 19th. The last show of the season is "Annie", which I am quite excited for as well. Showtimes are the weekend of August 25th and September 8th.

Green Frog Cafe in Palouse, WA

As my boyfriend and I were driving back to Pullman from his house in Montana last year, we decided to take a detour and go through Palouse (yes, and actual town). We decided to stop in at this interesting little cafe and see what they had to offer. I think the best description I could give to the atmosphere of the cafe is eccentric and fun! The people are great, the food is amazing and their espresso drinks are the best.

Location

As I said before, The Green Frog Cafe is located just outside of Pullman in a town called Palouse about 15 miles from campus. It's actually a pretty scenic drive from Pullman so you won't be disappointed.

What's the Food Like?

First of all, everything is homemade... EVERYTHING! The cafe serves breakfast foods such as pastries, baked goods, coffee, tea and amazing espresso (with locally-owned Thomas Hammer Coffee). They serve lunch from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Tuesdays thru Saturdays. They have grilled and cold sandwiches, wraps, pitas, soups and salads. Their sandwiches (and breakfast items) are made on homemade bread from Wheatberries Bakery and sliced incredibly thick, yum! The cafe only serves dinner on Fridays and Saturdays 5 p.m. - 7:45 p.m., but they are still open throughout the day serving pastries, espresso and other light snacks. Some of the appetizers include quesadillas, sharable pizzas and a hummus plate. For entrees they have Parmesan polenta, cheese ravioli, a mushroom philly and even some items from the lunch menu.

Every Thursday evening they have live music and some open mic nights as well. The atmosphere is always fun and energetic, and upon walking in, you'll know it's different from your average cafe! They also serve beer and wine as well!

THE DUNES!!!

Ok, ok, we all know winter is quickly approaching and our days at the beloved "dunes" are long gone with the sun and syllabus week. However, that doesn't mean we can't still talk about it. Embarrassingly enough, my first trip to the dunes was this year, as a senior (yikes!). So, don't be like me and wait till your last year in Pullman to experience WSU students' favorite place to go during the summer.

What are the Dunes, Anyway?
The dunes are located on the snake river near lower granite dam. The dam is open from Monday thru Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., so be sure to give yourself enough time because otherwise, you'll have to take the long way home.

Where the heck are they?
Contrary to popular belief, the dunes are actually located just outside of Pullman in a little town called Pomeroy, WA. Depending on which way you go, it takes anywhere from 33 - 40 miles to get there, and anywhere between an hour to an hour and a half. Well worth the drive!

So What do we do There?
The dunes are located on waist-deep water provided by the Snake River. It's enjoyable because it's not too deep but you can still get cooled off on a hot day. A lof of people bring picnics, water floaties, beverages and even set up nets for water sports. Just remember to clean up after yourself because this area should stay as nice and beautiful as it currently is!

Free, Free, Free!
One of the best parts of visiting the dunes is, besides the snacks and gas, the trip is free! It's a great alternative for struggling college students on a budget.

So whether you're looking for a place to cool off on those scorching Pullman summer days, a place to hang out with LOTS of Cougs (depending on the day) or you just finally have to see what this place is all about, make the trip to the dunes one summer weekend, and you won't regret it!

For those of you WSU students with a more sophisticated taste for good food and fine wine, Black Cypress located on Main Street in downtown Pullman is definitely your scene. Their small, yet exquisite menu offers food items unlike anywhere else in Pullman.

What is Their Menu Like?

Their menu is full of mainly Greek-style food, and the owner even cooked in Greece! Appetizers range from $4 - $11, not bad at all, especially for the quality. Some items on their appetizer list are Souvlakia (pork skewers) (7), clams (11) and the good ol' (but much better) Caesar salad (5/8). Entrees start off at a measly $11 for the pomodora (a better version of spaghetti) or with meatballs for $14. The last time I visited, I ordered the myzithra and mushrooms, which was a pasta with brown butter, myzithra cheese and mushrooms (13). It was to die for. But if you're not much of a pasta person there are also a variety of meat as well. Lamb chops (21) or pork chops (19), New York or rib eye steak (24), roasted chicken (19) or grilled tofu (14). Needless to say, there are many items to choose from!

Bring on the Drinks!

The Black Cypress offers some of the most original and mouth-watering cocktails I've seen on the Palouse. They definitely have a little something for everyone; and the great part is, each one is between $7 - $8, what a steal! My personal favorites are the arlo and mojito, and you can check out the whole cocktail list on their website at www.theblackcypress.com to see what's in every magical cocktail. There are even great whiskey, gin, rum and Bourbon cocktails on the list: I know where I'm taking my dad for dad's weekend! For those of you wine connoisseurs out there, Black Cypress is a great place to go for fabulous wine. They offer great local wines from Washington, Oregon and California, and also wine from all over the world. They even have my favorite wine, Maryhill Pinot Gris from the Columbia valley!

So if you're looking for a little different atmosphere from the usual Pullman restaurants and bars, look no further. The Black Cypress Bar and Kitchen offers one of Pullman's most unique ambiances and experience you could ever imagine.

Last but not least, they offer manicures and pedicures that are phenomenal! Full leg and arm massage with every mani/pedi! Prices at Identity range from $25 - $140, so yes, their services do add up fast!

What is the Ambiance Like in the Spa?
Instantly, when you step into Identity, you feel calm and peaceful. Their entire facility is small and quaint, yet very modern and chic. It is extremely clean with calming colors and fun staff.

What is the menu like?

Fastkart Speedway’s House of Speed has an indoor kart-racing track where you can feel the rush.

This indoor track in Spokane, Wash. hosts lap races from 40, 60 to 100 laps.

Track Hours:

Monday – 4-9 p.m.

Tues-Thurs – 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Fri-Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m.

Sunday 12 p.m.-6p.m.

It is recommended that parties call ahead to see if the track is available, but it can only be reserved for private parties.

With days getting shorter and nights getting longer, plummeting temperatures are forcing us to spend more time indoors. However, this doesn't mean you're relegated to a boring night on the couch. Today's trip takes us back to Spokane to Laser Quest, an indoor attraction that's sure to keep your heart rate and entertainment level high.

What can I expect from a night at laser quest?

"Laser Quest is a fast paced game for ages 5 to 85 – a high tech combination of tag and hide and seek. On of Pullman's main problems is its size. The low yearly population lends itself to a quiet and homey atmosphere, which in itself is not a bad thing. However, Pullman's size severely limits the amount of truly high-end cultural experiences available to its residents. Fortunately, fine dining and a night at the theater are just an hour-and-a-half away.

What will I see at the Spokane Opera House (INB Performing Arts Center)?

The PAC's main draw is the diverse array of shows it brings in on a nearly weekly basis. Opera fans can have their cake and eat it too, but those with more low-brow sensibilities have the option of seeing a Monty Python musical (or similar show) as well.
